10 super handy tips for cleaning a Keurig

Almost everyone who owns a Keurig swears by it. But, just as many people probably have no idea how to clean it.
We rely on these machines every day, often multiple times a day. And over time, the water reservoir accumulates buildup, as do the pipes and tubes. Keurig suggests that you clean -- or descale as they call it -- every 3 to 6 months to keep it running smoothly. The buildup isn't bad for you, but it will eventually ruin your Keurig if you don't take care of it.

We've combined the recommended steps from the manufacturer here to ensure you clean your machine properly, as well as a few alternative tips from experts and fellow Keurig users. Here are the 10 tips you need to know!
LOOSEN ANY DEBRIS
If your Keurig doesn't seem to be working as well as it used too, Housewife How To's says you might need to perform some extra steps before you get started on the cleaning process. If your Keurig seems to be working fine but obviously just needs to be cleaned, you can skip these first two steps.
1. The needles that pierce the Keurig coffee cup might need to be changed. Luckily, these can also be cleaned. Simply grab and unbend a paperclip, then open the top of the Keurig and insert the end of the paper clip into the holes. Move the paperclip around to loosen any debris and clear up the channel that delivers water to the coffee pods.
2. With your Keurig over a sink and the top open, flip it upside down and give it a few firm taps with the palm of your hand. This is going to once again loosen any debris that is floating around in there clogging up your coffee making.
PREP
3. Empty out the water from the Water Reservoir. If you have a
Keurig Water Filter, remove it and set it aside for now.
4. Turn the brewer off so you can get started.
DESCALING RINSE
5. Grab a bottle of the Keurig Descaling Solution and pour it into the Water Reservoir. If you don't have this solution, Housewife How To's suggests using half water and half white vinegar. Now, press the power button and turn it back on.
6. Take a large mug and place it on the drip tray. Now, you're going to do the motions like you're brewing coffee but without the filter in it. Lift and lower the handle, select the 10 oz brew size and press the brew button. This cleans out the pipes and tubes within the machine.
7. Repeat step number 4 until you run out of water in the reservoir. The machine will indicate 'More water please'. Then afterward, let it sit for about a half hour.
CLEAN WATER RINSE
8. Clean out the water reservoir thoroughly -- rinsing with soap and water.
9. Fill up the water reservoir with clean water and do the same as you did in step 4. Without using a filter have the machine dispense you hot water to thoroughly clean the machine.
10. Repeat this step 12 times -- you may have to refill the water reservoir in order to do it to full 12 times. Then, you're done! Now, get brewing!
